It is certainly not a pleasant taste left by the history with OAKA, admitted to SKAI 100.3 the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yannis Vroutsis.

As Mr. Vroutsis said, “recently assuming the ministry, I learn that there is an ongoing study on the Calatrava canopies. The study was done for the five areas for the Calatrava canopies and lasted nine months.”

He continued: “The findings have forced me to take the political decision to order the suspension of operations in two of the five areas, the track and field.”

Mr. Vroutsis also said that there was a study on some rigs that appear in videos from 2018 to make a big swing. As he said, the conclusion was that the sway in the stands was within the technical specifications. “This has nothing to do with the Calatrava canopies” he added and added that he is not aware of any other study on the canopies.

He pointed out that this is the first government that bent over OAKA and gave 57 million euros: “For the first time, money was given to do a thorough static investigation. We have to recognize that.”

For the study that showed a static problem she said is multi-sectioned, it was then sent to the TEE and a re-evaluation was requested to reconfirm her findings.

He added that a very high-level committee will assess the situation and tell us what needs to be done from now on.

“I’m also waiting for the conclusion, the committee will work soon” he said characteristically and added that two orders have been given to the TEE, to give answers as quickly as possible with the best possible scientific staff, always with safety in mind.

When asked when the OAKA is expected to reopen, he replied: “The OAKA will continue to be the heart of sports in our country, we will restore everything necessary to get it back into operation.”

Regarding the cycle track, he said that with the technical knowledge of TAIPED and in collaboration with the TEE, the estimate is that by the end of 2024 it will have reopened.

Regarding the rumor that the manual for the maintenance of the OAKA has been lost, he said that he has given the order to gather all the documents that exist in order to establish the truth.

Finally, he said that from August 2018 there will be no stadium that will operate without fire safety and static study.
