The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, George Amyras, was found this morning in the Rapentosa area of Penteli, after the incident of the killing of two dogs.
Mr. Amyras, accompanied by the head of the Forest Management Department of the General Directorate of Forests of RIS, Panagiotis Drougas, conducted an autopsy at the scene and was informed about the investigation of the incident by the Penteli Forest Office and the Agios Stefanos Forestry.
During the visit it was decided to examine in detail all available data, with an investigation that may require the exhumation of the two dogs and the receipt of samples of genetic material, in the presence of a State veterinarian. The aim is, in collaboration with the environmental organization “Kallisto”, which has scientific experience regarding wild mammals, to determine whether the attack on the dogs, which were in a fenced area, was made by a wolf or some other animal and accordingly to give further instructions to stakeholders and residents.
“If it is a wolf, we will take measures, such as marking the area and informing the inhabitants about the presence of this species of mammal, in order to avoid the collision of man-made activities and wild animals. Nevertheless, let’s wait and see what the scientists say. We will act on the basis of data with the help of the forest department and the forestry office. However, the most important thing to know is that the appearance of wild animals in such areas with forests and mountains is no exception, it is normal. So we must try to find a balance, so that no one is endangered, neither the wildlife, nor the people and their pets “said the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, George Amyras.
The meeting was attended by the head of the Penteli forest department, Athanasios Reppas, the head of the forestry of Agios Stefanos, Costas Mougios, the deputy mayor of Civil Protection of the municipality of Dionysos, Manolis Kokkalis and local volunteers of the Municipal
The planning of RIS for the information of the public includes the immediate publication of a brochure with useful instructions for the protection of citizens and their pets, in collaboration with “Kallisto”
