Many dishes we enjoy today are the result of centuries-old recipes passed down from generation to generation. There is however one place in Spain where we can enjoy traditional dishes in the same location that has been serving customers for almost three hundred years: the Sobrino de Botín in Madrid it is considered by Guinness World Records as the oldest restaurant in the world.

Not only has it served continuously since the 18th century, but its oven did not go out for a single moment during the Spanish Civil War and the recent pandemic. Moreover, the building in which it is housed is even older: it dates back to 1590. Today, it occupies four floors and is accessed through a wooden door. Its staff amounts to 70 people and it can seat up to 200 lovers of good cuisine at tables.

Sobrino de Botín

It was opened under the name Casa Botín in 1725 by a French chef named Jean Botin. As he and his wife had no children, the restaurant was inherited by one of his nephews in 1753. It then took the name Sobrino de Botín (Nephew of Botín), which it has retained to this day. It changed hands once more, when it was acquired in the last century by the González family, who operate it to this day. It is known for serving delicious Castilian cuisine, particularly its world-famous roast pork with potatoes and jamón.

With a history of so many years, it witnessed many historical events and many famous people passed through its doors. Goya worked in his kitchen before becoming a painter. In the previous century, Ernest Hemingway visited it often and mentions it in his 1926 novel And the Sun Also Rises.
