An initiative aimed at raising awareness among students about the prevention of floods and forest fires, as well as helping them acquire knowledge related to environmental protection, the effects of natural disasters and climate change, is undertaken by Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports and proceeds with the implementation of the educational program “Schools “adopt” terrestrial and coastal ecosystems of Greece”.

With the relevant decision signed by the Deputy Minister of Education, Religion and Sports, Domna Michailidou, the program will be implemented within the current year 2023-2024 in Primary and Secondary Education schools. Thus, the students will have the opportunity to get to know a place, to learn its needs, the improvement interventions it needs in order to protect it and in this way they will contribute to the awareness of the local community.

Domna Michailidou said about this initiative of the ministry: “Environmental education is a basic condition for saving our natural and cultural heritage. That is why we invest in cultivating students’ environmental awareness. Because through environmental education students can acquire a positive life attitude towards the environment. Unfortunately, recently, with both forest fires and floods, we have witnessed natural disasters with tragic consequences for our natural environment and society. It is therefore imperative, more than ever, to be aware of the environment and to teach our children how to protect it. Make sure they understand the value of natural disaster prevention and the cost of climate change. Because as long as we cultivate environmental awareness in our children, we will improve the living conditions of all of us”.
