Even with over 140,000 mushroom species recorded worldwide, new discoveries are constantly being made.
Capturing a wide range of mushrooms with his lens, photographer Max Mudie he is fascinated by the range of colors, sizes and textures he encounters in both rural and urban environments.

“I like to try to find as many species as possible. The more unknowns, the better,” he said, speaking to Colossal. “I’m not the first to say this and I won’t be the last, but when you find out how vital fungi are to our existence everything else seems insignificant“, he emphasized.
Mudie’s long-time love of fungi blossomed when he moved back to the countryside about five years ago and couldn’t resist the temptation to search for, record and grow mushroom species. He regularly participates in walks of groups of amateur mycologists to discover and identify different types. One of the relatively recent notable discoveries is a bioluminescent species.
Even with over 140,000 mushroom species recorded worldwide, new discoveries are constantly being made. The British photographer gets excited when he stumbles upon rare or uncatalogued items. “I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of a vast subject,” he confesses. “Many species are out there waiting to be described, which means there is a lot of work to be done; and that, for me, makes it one of the most exciting topics to focus on.».
In many cases, species Mudie encounters are so tiny that powerful macro lenses are required to capture their intricate details. On his Instagram account, he often shares short videos, and there we can follow updates on upcoming presentations and events.
