They participated in a protest against the closure of ELTA in Kardamyla
Police officers of the island proceeded today with the arrest of Markos Kounoupas, president of the Lagada Community of Chios and Kostas Mavrelos, president of the Sykiadas Community of Chios, in the process of self-immolation.
The two presidents are accused of obstructing the operation of a non-profit facility, because yesterday protesting against the closure of the Hellenic Post office in Kardamyla, they protested together with dozens of their fellow citizens outside the ELTA central store in the city of Chios.
The same charge has been brought against Michalis Fitousis, president of the Pityous Community of Chios and Dora Savvopoulos, president of the Kardamylon Community who participated in the mobilization and presented themselves at the Police building in the city of Chios where they were also arrested.
“The police are doing their job, the prosecutor’s office is also doing their job and we are defending the right of our villages to live,” said Michalis Fitousis in a statement, noting that “they represent the local communities that are reacting to the closure of yet another service in their area.”
