In today’s intervention by the president of the Authority for Ensuring the Privacy of Communications (ADAE), Christos Rammos, to the European Parliament’s LIBE committee, the president of the SYRIZA-PS Parliamentary Group reports in his announcement, Socrates Famous, stating that this intervention “confirms and highlights serious problems in democratic functions and respect for the work of the Independent Authorities in Greece”.

Mr. Famellos argues that “the scandal of illegal wiretapping remains “in the drawer”, even though constitutionally protected rights are asserted, the president of the Independent Authority is publicly threatened by government officials, while members of the authority-ADAE who perform their constitutional duty are prosecuted”.

He then argues for “colossal responsibilities of Mr. Mitsotakis and his government, since their actions violate the rule of law and the European acquis and expose our country to the world.”

He finally notes: “The democratic world must institutionally take joint initiatives for the protection and support of the independent Authorities and above all for the respect and implementation of all constitutional provisions. And the Judiciary, as a pillar of the democratic rule of law, must carry out its work with speed, independence and efficiency so that no question is left unanswered and the institution and the sense of justice in society are preserved. SYRIZA-PS will be present and contribute with all its strength in this social agreement of democracy.
