On the occasion of reports that speak of long delays in passport control at the international airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” due to a shortage of police officers, the ELAS Headquarters issued a statement clarifying the police officers assigned to serve the passengers.

The relevant announcement in detail:

“The following is clarified by the Hellenic Police Headquarters:

– All the country’s airports – and the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” – every year, during the summer season, are reinforced with additional police personnel as well as Probationary Constables, who remain until the end of October, when the summer season ends.

-Specifically for the “Eleftherios Venizelos” airport, this year’s summer season, the Athens Airport Police Directorate was reinforced with 67 police officers from various services and 164 Probationary Police Officers – more than any other year – who returned to Schools after the end of the season.

At “Eleftherios Venizelos” there is a large number of arrivals and departures – much higher than in previous years. For this reason, a reinforcement of 50 additional police officers of the General Police Directorate of Attica was foreseen at the end of the summer season.

-In this transitional period, some delays will naturally be observed. It is clear, however, that efforts are being made to better serve passengers, as at the same time there are great demands in different fields such as strengthening visible policing, Police Departments, Traffic Departments as well as Security Departments.”
