With commemorations in history Greek Military Cemetery of the Hellenes fallen of the ’40 epic in Vouliarates, the Greek epic of 40 and NOI was celebrated today.
The Greek government was represented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Hellenism Abroad, Georgios Kotsiras, while high-ranking military officials were also present GEETHA.
The Albanian government was represented by the governor of Argyrokastro, Odise Kote, and representatives of the Albanian Army Staff were also present. Also attended were hundreds of Greeks, members of the National Greek Minority in Albania and local rulers, among them the Italian consul in Argyrokastro, Theodoros Biliussis.
For the Greek side, the events of honor for NO began earlier in the other large cemetery of Kleisoura.
After the divine service in the respective churches of the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos in Kleisoura and of Agios Athanasios in Vouliarates, memorial prayers and laying of wreaths followed.
Greeting the events, Mr. Kotsiras said that “like today, 83 years ago, hope defeated fear. Our ancestors, defending the timeless values ​​of freedom, democracy and justice, fought bravely for the high ideals that we Greeks have bequeathed to humanity”.
Addressing the Greek ethnic minority, the deputy minister emphasized that its timeless presence constitutes “the guardian of the history and traditions of Hellenism” in Albania. “Greece was and will always be by your side,” he said characteristically.
Speaking about the Greek-Albanian relations, the Greek minister pointed out the Greek support for Albania’s European path, provided that all the prerequisites are met.
“In this context, he specifically said, we also await the resolution of the issue of Freddy Beleris, in a spirit of cooperation and good mood so that it stops further overshadowing the relations between us. Freddy Beleri added, he has the inalienable right to be sworn in as mayor of Chimara. It is his right that stems from the Albanian constitutional order and from the rules of the rule of law.”
The Greek Deputy Minister thanked the Albanian side for the cooperation in locating, exhuming, identifying and burying the Greek fallen of the Epic of 40.
“Due to this tireless long-term work, today the bones of more than 1500 Greek fallen have been identified and rest in peace in the two Greek military cemeteries of Kleisoura and Vouliaratio”.
Commemoration and pride events were organized all these days by school students, cultural clubs and other local minority organizations.
