The controls were carried out at the toll gates of Iasmos, Rodopi, and the port of Piraeus.
A large quantity of chemical solvents and products, used in the adulteration of liquid fuels, were detected and seized by customs auditors of the Independent Inland Revenue Authority.
The controls were carried out at the toll gates of Iasmos, Rodopi, and the port of Piraeus.
Specifically:
a) Booking of a tank truck from Bulgaria:
The inspectors spotted a tanker truck at the Iasmos toll station. The tanker, belonging to a Bulgarian transport company, which had entered the country through the border station of Ormeni, carried – according to a statement – 24,366 liters of adblue, which is an additional liquid for engines, to reduce emissions. The sender was said to be a Bulgarian company, while the recipient was declared to be a Greek company, based in Attica.
From the check, it was found that there was no real recipient, confirming the relevant information. The tanker was impounded and taken to Xanthi Customs.
The results from the chemical examination of the solvent showed that the tanker was carrying a mixture of light hydrocarbons, which resembles fuel and can be used as such, but is dangerous adulterated fuel and not pure gasoline.
The auditors estimate that the specific mixture was attempted to be channeled into gas stations.
The customs officials informed their counterparts in Bulgaria, as a result of which the entry of a second tank truck with the same sender, receiver and transport company information was prevented from the border station of Ormeni.
b) Reservoir commitment in Piraeus:
At the same time, in Piraeus, the inspectors found containers with chemical solvents, the transport of which had not been declared in the Customs information system.
According to the shipping documents, the total quantity of solvents was 18,540 liters, while the sender was a Polish company and the recipient a Greek company based in Evia. The investigation showed that the Greek company is fictitious and is used to draw up the cargo transport documents.
The container tank has been impounded, while receiving the results of the chemical analysis will complete the confiscation procedures for smuggling. The search to identify all those involved continues.
