A pan-educational rally is currently taking place in the center of Thessaloniki
Students, members of student associations, teachers (members of ELME) and members of Parents and Guardians associations gathered shortly after 11 a.m. at the statue of Venizelos with a request to cover the gaps in the schools, to transport the students, to staff the schools with psychologists and to maintain the school infrastructure.
“We are participating in today’s all-education rally to declare once again that the normality that the Ministry of Education is trying to present for the operation of schools is fictitious,” said the president of the Association of Parents and Guardians of Central Macedonia, Thanasis Kokonas, in a statement.
And he added: “Unfortunately, two months after the opening of the schools we have gaps in teachers, mainly to high school students and to students who will participate in the Panhellenic competitions. We have issues related to the transportation of students and the issue has not been resolved under the responsibility of the Central Macedonia region. Unfortunately, we still have over 500 students who are not transported to and from schools. Typical are the examples with ENEEGYL with students with special needs who live at home and their transportation has not been ensured. We have a lot of passing violence, inside and outside the school and unfortunately the government is not taking action. There are not enough school psychologists to meet the needs for so many cases. All this combined with the many problems of school housing and student safety are what create an explosive mixture and from this mobilization we want to send a message that parents we will not lower walls and we will continue to demand safety conditions”.
At the same time, the rally has a character of solidarity with the Palestinian peoplewith protesters calling for “an end to the slaughter in the Gaza Strip.”
“Today, students, students and teachers, we are taking to the streets and demanding here and now to have degrees with merit and free studies. Recently, all students and citizens have been watching the crime that continues to develop in Palestine. We condemn our country’s involvement in the massacre of the Palestinian people and we demand here and now that all economic, political and military cooperation of our country with the murderous state of Israel be stopped,” said the President of the Chemistry Department Student Association Christina Stamoulis.
The lack of teachers even now, two months after the start of the school year, was also addressed by Zoe Sevastidou, a student of the 3rd high school of the Experimental Neapolis, talking about gaps in orientation courses.
The demonstrators are currently marching in the center of Thessaloniki, while the route they will follow is Egnatia Street, Agia Sofia, Tsimiski, Ion. Dragoumi, ending with YMATH.
