Bakoyannis: “The first step for a modern, European and safe theater “Embros”” – Balomenos: “Another successful synergy of ETAD with the Municipality of Athens for the benefit of society and citizens”
The “Embros” theater, an emblematic place of culture located in the district of Psyrri, is acquired by the Municipality of Athens following a relevant contract signed with the Public Real Estate Company (ETAD), after efforts that lasted several months. Now, the Municipality of Athens can undertake the restoration and promotion of the property.
The theater building was erected in the 1930s and initially functioned as a printing office for the EMBROS newspaper. From 1988 to 2007 it operated for the first time as a theater, while in 2011 it was placed under occupation.
“The first step was taken so that “EMBROS” becomes a modern, European and safe theater and to give a precious “breath” of culture to residents, visitors and people of art. With planning and persistence, we succeeded in giving the city another place of culture”, said the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis.
On his part, the Authorized Advisor, Acting Managing Director of ETAD, Panagiotis Balomenos said characteristically: “The agreement we reached with the Municipality of Athens marks a new chapter in the promotion and exploitation of an emblematic and historical property. In this way, through the close and sincere cooperation of ETAD with the Municipality of Athens, we are correcting a problematic situation of the past that, through the appropriate interventions of promotion and restoration on the part of the Municipality, will return the historical theater Embros to its rightful place for the benefit of of the citizens and visitors of Athens. This agreement proves that in cooperation with all Municipalities and local bodies throughout the country we can cooperate effectivelyin order to resolve perennial problems concerning the properties of the Greek State and to create the conditions for their utilization with positive results for the local communities and for the country as a whole”.
The “Embros” theater is one of the many links in the chain of interventions of the current municipal authoritywhich enriched Athens with new free public spaces, iconic landmarks and historic buildings linked to the city’s history.
In the last four years, the Municipality of Athens acquired properties such as: the historical “Resort” of Pikionis on Filopappos Hill, the theater on Lycabettus Hill, the Olympic swimming pool in Zappeion, the former Botrys factory in Sepolia.
