“Half a century later, the Polytechnic maintains its high symbolism, as the top act of resistance against the dictatorship and the violation of freedom,” said the president of the Republic after laying the wreath
The President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou laid a wreath at the Polytechnic, for the 50th anniversary of the uprising.
Katerina Sakellaropoulou arrived at the site of the Polytechnic in Patision shortly after 9, and laid the wreath at the student’s monument.
The statement of the President of the Republic:
“Half a century later, the Polytechnic maintains its high symbolism, as the leading act of resistance against the dictatorship and the violation of freedom. An act that was not self-evident, nor inexpensive. It entailed danger, required sacrifice, carried the weight of a responsibility, personal and collective, that few had the courage to assume. Thanks to their own selflessness and self-sacrifice, our country was able to turn the black page of seven years. We owe them honor and gratitude.
The Polytechnic marked our modern history and founded the democratic consciousness of the post-colonial period, the most peaceful and progressive period of the country. In it was embedded the belief that there is no room for discounts, both in our political self-determination and in our free way of life. His memory is alive and instructive, containing the principles that sustain our social and political symbiosis through time. Today, when democracy is established and strong, it remains our duty to defend it with the same passion and the same unwavering will that those besieged young people showed fifty full years ago.”
