Fir trees, garlands, lanterns, hanging boots, even an entrance mat with a Christmas welcome, have “dressed up” not a house, an office or a shop, but a city bus. The driver of the line “57 Oreokastro – Aristotelous” operated by KTEL Thessaloniki decorated the public transport vehicle with decorations taken from a holiday fairy tale.

Passengers may not be boarding the polar express but the Christmas bell is ringing and they hear it as they board the vehicle that this time offers them a different route. The driver Manos Katsikas, who loves the holidays and more the smiles on the faces of passengers suffering from the traffic chaos of Thessaloniki, is now considered by many to be the driver of Christmas.

“Watching videos of buses from abroad on Tik Tok, especially in Stuttgart, with extravagant decorations, I said: Why not in Thessaloniki? With the KTEL administration agreeing to the idea and in consultation with the other drivers who share the routes, we decorated the bus again this year. We put almost everything that someone sees in the living room of their home” says Mr. Katsikas speaking to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency.

However, this is not the first time that the 33-year-old driver decides to “transfer” the festive spirit of Christmas to the daily routes. The idea started last year when he was a driver on another bus. This year, however, the decoration has been leveled up with more inspiration and a lot more colors and lanterns, she describes.

“On the front door of the bus there is a tree with lights, the board is covered in Christmas fluffy fabric, as is a lion wearing a plush hat. On the roof of the vehicle are hung garlands and boots, on the pillars are placed smaller trees with lights. Small touches that symbolize something big” says Mr. Katsikas adding: “If someone has inspiration and will, he succeeds”.

The videos from the routes of the decorated bus, which he has posted both himself and the passengers, mostly of young age, are “sweeping” on social media. The setting is completed by Christmas music and the necessary stylistic choice with hats, while in the following days the guides will also offer the traditional melomakaroni.
