The intervention of the Traffic Police was immediate after they rushed to the scene and installed ribbons that prohibit the passage of passers-by, both pedestrians and vehicles.
An “alarm” sounded early this morning at the Municipal Police when they were notified that part of a balcony fell on the road, on Smyrnis Street in the center of Heraklion.
According to information from Cretalive, the incident happened late last night with the owner of an adjacent shop seeing the rubble this morning and immediately alerting both the Traffic and the Municipal Police.
The intervention of the Traffic Police was immediate after they rushed to the scene and installed ribbons that prohibit the passage of passers-by, both pedestrians and vehicles.
As can be seen in the photos, parts of the balcony have suffered significant plaster peeling with the reinforcement (the irons) visible, while the irons also have severe oxidation.
However, a team of the Municipal Police who carried out an on-site autopsy at the scene found that many drivers of two-wheeled vehicles violate the markings and proceed to pass through the dangerous point, at the risk of their physical integrity.
It is believed that the section became detached and fell due to strong winds.
In any case, the incident was sent as an emergency by the Municipal Police to the Town Planning of Heraklion in order to take the necessary actions to avoid injury to a citizen while at the same time it is in the process of searching for the owner.
It is an old, abandoned hotel located at the junction of Smyrni and Hatzimichali Giannari streets, right behind the Courts in the center of the city.
