How the “Cappuccino coast” effect is caused
The impressive natural phenomenon “Cappuccino coast” appeared on the beaches of southern Crete, due to the weather conditions prevailing in the last few hours.
According to social media users, the rich foam washed up by the waves on the beach appeared on the beach of Matala, but mainly in Kommos, impressing everyone who noticed it.
In essence, this is a process of “self-cleaning” of the sea which occurs during periods of weather conditions similar to those of the previous 24 hours, i.e. strong waves and very strong to gale force winds.
Large waves carried the foam that washed up on the beach, giving the impression of a giant cup of cappuccino with rich foam. Besides, as reported by cretalive.gr, the phenomenon got its name from this drink.
According to scientists, the “cappuccino coast” caused when salts, impurities, chemicals, plankton, algal secretions and decaying remains of marine flora and fauna mix in the sea. With the strong currents that are created, these wastes are mixed with each other resulting in the creation of bubbles which are carried to the shore by the waves.
