The assessment that if no extraordinary events occur, the international prices of natural gas and electricity will deescalate high-level sources of the Ministry of Environment and Energy expressed yesterday, noting, however, that there is always insecurity due to the front in the Middle East.

With the basic scenario, they added, there is no need to restore horizontal subsidies however, the tools that were implemented during the height of the energy crisis are always available and could be reactivated if necessary. Besides, there are always the tools to support the vulnerable, such as the Social Tariff, the new tariff for those with many children, the subsidies based on the criteria of the heating allowance that will apply from 2024.

Similar positions on energy prices were made yesterday by energy market actors in the context of the energy conference organized by the Ministry of the Interior.

The Emeritus Professor of NTUA Pantelis Kapros, reported that the projections in the framework of the National Energy and Climate Plan show that the price of electricity (with increasing penetration of RES, technological advances, and improvements in market functioning) in the coming years will be constantly decreasing. DESFA CEO Maria Rita Gali noted for her part that while the country’s security of supply is improving, there is still a delicate balance on the price front, as small disturbances can create large fluctuations.

The same sources of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs they also estimate that t70% of electricity consumers (about 5 million meters) will switch from January 1 to the “green” tariff established by the ministry.

The aim is on the one hand to consumers are given the opportunity to easily and directly compare suppliers’ tariffs and on the other hand to strengthen competition in electricity supply.

Suppliers, by next Friday 1 December 2023, will have to inform consumers about the parameters of the new tariffs.

Consumers in the period until January 1, 2024, will have the opportunity to compare the proposals of suppliers and choose the supplier and the tariff that covers their energy needs.
