London, Thanasis Gavos

The information that the British government has discussed legal avenues which would prevent any “export” of the Parthenon Sculptures to Athens, reports Sky News in the wake of the diplomatic row caused by Rishi Sounak’s cancellation of the meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

It is reported that at some unspecified time, the British government discussed the possibility of blocking the export license which some believe would be required to send the Sculptures to Greece.

Meanwhile, once again the Times newspaper with its main article favors the return of the Sculptors to Athens.

“It shouldn’t be about ownership, but about where one can best admire the marbles, those in Athens and those in the British Museum. Athey belong together as an artistic whole and belong to their natural environment’ notes the article, although at the end it refers to their “loan” from the British Museum.

A representative of the Parthenon Project organization, which has proposed the return of the Sculptors to Athens as part of a cultural collaboration, commented that it is a “pity” that the British Prime Minister “feels that he cannot discuss the matter of the Elginian Marbles with the Greek Prime Minister, especially given of how much the two countries have to gain from a reasonable solution and the degree of public support for reunification.”
