London, Thanasis Gavos

THE UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wanted to put an end to the discussion of the last few days regarding his move to cancel the meeting with him Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the London at the beginning of the week.

From the floor of the House of Commons on Wednesday, the British leader accused the Greek prime minister of “breaking assurances” that he would not talk about the Parthenon Sculptures and of intending to “make a show” of the issue.

Asked by reporters on Thursday as part of a visit to Surrey, shortly before he left for COP28 in Dubai, whether the issue was worth a diplomatic spat with Greece or whether his move was aimed at antagonizing Labour, Mr Sunak simply said : “I mentioned it in parliament yesterday.”

He added that he is focusing “on the things that really interest the world”, referring to discussions he will have in the context of the climate summit.

A publication by the Guardian reported that British government sources have “cautiously” hinted that there might be some momentary meeting between Mr. Sunak and Mr. Mitsotakis in Dubai.
