A 39-year-old Roma man was arrested on Friday morning in the area of ​​Lagadas, in Thessaloniki, for smuggling oil of dubious quality, which he marketed as “extra virgin”.

According to ELAS, he transported 49 containers with a capacity of 5 liters (a total of 245 liters) for which he did not have the legal documents while the contents were of a different shade in each container, lacked a relevant odor and, based on regulations, there were deficiencies in the proper labeling of olive oil.

“Policemen of the Lagadas Security Department, after appropriate use of information, identified and arrested a 39-year-old citizen, against whom a case was filed for violation of the legislation regarding criminal sanctions for non-compliance in the fields of food, animal feed, health and protection animals and the management of ZYP and FP, but also in arrangements for the purchase of products and the provision of services.

In particular, in the morning hours today (08-12-2023), in the area of ​​the Municipality of Lagadas, following a check carried out on a car owned by the arrested person, a total of (49) plastic containers with a capacity of (5) liters each, which were written on this is “Extra virgin olive oil” from the region of Greece.

As it was established after parallel communication with E.F.E.T. Thessaloniki, the contents were of a different shade in each container, lacked a relevant odor and based on regulations there were deficiencies in the proper labeling of the olive oil. In addition, the 39-year-old lacked relevant supporting documents justifying their possession and transportation.

The arrested person will be taken to the competent judicial authority, while for the confiscated containers he was ordered to the E.F.E.T. Thessaloniki to carry out sampling, to examine samples in terms of quality, authenticity and any risk to public health”.
