The European Commission added today the Engluvi lens in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO).

As the Commission points out, the Egluvi lentil refers to the seeds of a local lentil variety grown in Egluvi, Lefkada.

Lentils have a smooth surface and are less flat than the seeds of other varieties. They are particularly small and many have black or dark spots or spots. During cooking, Egluvi lentil heats up faster than medium to large varieties, so less of its nutrients are destroyed.

The geographical area of Egluvi lentil production includes the village of Egluvi in the Municipality of Lefkada.

In terms of climatic conditions, the months for growing lentils are between January (sowing) and June (harvesting).

However, the rainfall and winds that blow from mid-April to the end of May play a decisive role in the quality and quantity of the harvested product.

During this period the rainy weather and the westerly and north-westerly winds blowing from the Ionian Sea lead to excellent fertilization and therefore very good production.

The Egluvi lentil has been cultivated in the area since at least the 18th century and has not been mixed with other lentil varieties.
