Mourning and deep sorrow for the death of the 45-year-old firefighter in the traffic accident that happened shortly before 8:00 am at the 43rd kilometer of the Ioannina-Konitsa National Road.

The 45-year-old had finished his service at the Konitsa Fire Department and was on his way back to his home in Ioannina.

Near Vigla, the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with another car carrying three people, members of the same family.

The 45-year-old firefighter was pulled dead from his car while the three passengers of the other car were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Today (12-23-2023) in the morning at the 43rd km of the Ioannina-Kozani National Road I.X.E. car, driven by a 45-year-old citizen, collided with an I.X.E. car driven by a 46-year-old man and two other people were on board, resulting in the fatal injury of the 45-year-old man and injuries to the others.

A preliminary investigation into the circumstances of the accident is being conducted by the Pogoni Police Department.

“The Union of Employees of the Epirus Fire Brigade expresses its deep sadness for the death of Giorgos Soumaleuris.

This is the 45-year-old firefighter who was killed on Saturday morning at the Konitsa-Ioannina National Stadium as he was returning home from his service.

“Another sad day for the family of the Fire Brigade, colleague Soumaleuris Georgios breathed his last in a car accident when he was returning from the Service to his family. He was married and the father of a little girl. The Board of Directors of the Union of Fire Department Employees of the Epirus Region expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the unfortunate colleague”.

The funeral service will be held tomorrow 12/24 at the Holy Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Ioannina at 12:00″ the announcement states.
