Haris Doukas took over the duties of the mayor of Athens from the outgoing mayor Kostas Bakoyannis at the handover ceremony at the Kotzia Square City Hall.
It was preceded by the swearing-in ceremony of the young man mayor and the members of the municipal council in Municipal Market of Kypseli, in a message that Haris Doukas wanted to send to highlight the neighborhoods of the city, emphasizing characteristics “the municipality returns to the neighborhoods”.

Haris Doukas asked for unity and cooperation from the packed hall of the building with representatives of the political leadership and a number of local governments for the new Municipal Authority to respond to citizens’ trust with “social empathy and efficiency”.

In his speech, the new Mayor of Athens emphasized: “We gathered here in this neighborhood of Athens to signal our will to create a Green and Clean, Safe and Creative Athens. As we dream of her. As are the expectations of the Athenians. We are all here to say that life in Athens can get better. Obstacles do not deter us, difficulties can be overcome with joint effort. No exclusions, no exceptions. We chose this neighborhood for the symbolism that the municipality returns to the neighborhoods, where history and people’s lives are written every day.”
Mr. Doukas noted that in order for Athens to turn a new page, there are three basic conditions: “First, all actions must contribute to an environmentally cleaner city. This means brave energy interventions, it means a significant increase in greenery. Secondly, we want a new management model for the municipality, which will make it more efficient. We have already given the first sample of writing, assigning to all 26 municipal councilors of our faction (either as deputy mayors or as authorized councillors), a specific agenda of responsibilities. Thirdly, we want to create a new relationship between the municipality and the citizen that will be governed from the beginning: no decision in his absence. All important decisions will be taken after public consultation with the citizens.”
