A bear was freed from an illegal wild boar trap in Pogradec, after the cooperation of the “KALLISTOS” organization with Albanian environmental organizations and authorities.

In particular, on Wednesday, December 27, in a mountainous area of Pogradec, a bear operation was carried out by officers of the “Immediate Intervention Teams” of KALLISTO and PPNEA (Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania) to release a trapped bear.
This is an adult female bear, weighing about 90 kg and aged about 5 yearswhich had been caught in a wire noose – an illegal trap by poachers.

On December 26, PPNEA officials were informed by RAPA Korca that a bear was trapped in a mountainous area northwest of Pogradec. RAPA had been informed by a local breeder. The PPNEA people informed KALLISTO and jointly planned the operation which lasted from the morning until the early evening hours of December 27th. It took 1 hour of hiking with all the equipment to reach the spot where the animal was trapped by the mixed First Response Team. .

Although the unfortunate bear appears to have been confined for a relatively long time, approximately 1 week, it was in good general condition. The fact that where the noose was placed there were roots and leaves that helped the bear to feed and hydrate. After anesthetizing the animal, it was found that the wire rope that had trapped her in the leg had not caused her an open wound. This was followed by the fitting of a special GPS/GSM radio collar by the representative of KALLIST, which will provide useful data on the movement, ecology and biology of the bear in the area and their eventual interaction with humans. The radio collar sends the location of the animal every hour. It is worth noting that it is the first time that a radio collar has been placed on a bear in Albania.
