Mourning for George, anger for “those who today hide behind their mom and dad” and took his life, but also a commitment that Justice will be served
Lament, heartbreakbut also anger for those who led to the death of his colleague, the man who together, inside a “cage”, spent the days of service overflowed funeral delivered by George Lyggeridis’ comrade, addressing him the last cheer. The policeman with a steady voice, despite his obvious emotion, but also the frustration he showed at one point for what “doesn’t change”, he described the critical moments after George’s injury and at the same time gave him the promise that Justice would be served.
Listen to an excerpt from the funeral:
The officer referred at length to career path of Giorgos Lyggeridis which started in 2013 in the directorate of police operations, until it came to the fateful night of December 7, when the naval flare was planted in the leg of the just 31-year-old policeman and marked the countdown to his life. “You held your shield upright. You didn’t fall. Because this is the task of MATatzis. And you had embraced it, deep inside”, said the two-parter and continued: “No one falls. We leave no one behind. That’s how we always do. You were in excruciating pain. But you didn’t cry. You didn’t shout. You were serious and dignified. You knew the consequences of this trauma. Our platoon did everything they could to secure your life. Of those who today hide, behind their mom and dad as well as the lawyers of their favorite team.
The police officer then showed frustration and no hope that anything will change: “It was always like this. That’s how it will be. Because they hide their faces, while the faces of the police officers are visible and clear. We delivered you to the charioteer with 9 pulses. The Service has made arrests and more are to come. Don’t worry George. We will bring them out of their burrows. Justice will be served. You were and are a role model for young colleagues. And now you will be an Immortal Hero for all of us, as well as for future police officers. It is our duty, your name and your blood to honor it. You were mortally wounded on the battlefield to ensure social peace.”
In another part of the funeral, George Lyggeridis’s companion referred to crowd of people who turned out to say goodbye to the young policemansingling out his family—his parents and twin sister—promising to support them and stand by them: “To the manly man, death, death is not counted. Lyggeridis Georgios. Immortal”, concluded.
