In a field of intense political confrontation the out-of-court statement of the family of the driver of the fatal train in Tempe, to the Commission of Inquiry, which denounced the violation of the driver’s medical confidentiality as well as the alteration of the documents filed, developed.
The extra-judicial court, as expected, was busy with the work of the examination, with the chairman of the committee stressing that “No out-of-court protest can lead to the suspension of the work of the commission of inquiry and her attempt to shed light on the death of the train driver as well as the others”, bringing back the majority’s proposal that “the discussion, regarding the train driver, should not continue to be held with open cameras”, blaming the opposition that had rejected it .
The opposition MPs reacted, insisting that the process continue as normal, denouncing the majority for instrumentalizing the issue, with the climate becoming highly electrified when the KKE MP, Nikos Karathanasopoulos took the floor, commenting “a little shame doesn’t hurt”, with Dimitris Markopoulos to answer him that “We are not doctors but we are investigators, we have the right to investigate, basically as far as I understand, your proposal is for the meeting to be open” and the KKE deputy to reply “Shame! You are filthy!’
The confrontation that followed is typical of the tension that prevailed:
DIMITRIS MARKOPOULOS: You tell us to stop being an investigative body (…) You personally guided Mr. Kokkalis in an open process. Personally. And you were also from Larissa.
NIKOS KARATHANASOPOULOS: Kutsavaki…
VASILIS KOKKALIS: Mr. Markopoulos, I did not wish for a Gourlid committee…
DIMITRIS MARKOPOULOS: I do not allow you, Mr. Karatharanasopoulos. Those on the streets not here. The sneaky ones where you know. I don’t allow you.
NIKOS KARATHANASOPOULOS: I don’t allow you. Little boy, little boy.
DIMITRIS MARKOPOULOS: The ones where they pass you by. On the streets and on the sidewalk. Not here.
NIKOS KARATHANASOPOULOS: You took a lot of air. Cut it out.
DIMITRIS MARKOPOULOS: Fuck it, not me. Same on you. same on you. Will you beat us Mr. Karathanasopoulos? You have escaped. And if necessary I will also take measures that you have escaped. Same on you. what features are these? What market style is this? who are you addressing? If you continue like this I will take measures Mr. Karathanasopoulos, I am not afraid of you on the sidewalk.
The work of the committee was interrupted for about half an hour, with Dimitris Markopoulos upon the resumption of the meeting requesting that “phrases that do not suit the style of the committee” be deleted from the minutes.
