Bad weather continues in our country with snowfall continuing in places in northern Greece even in the lowlands, in Thessaly and Central Greece in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas and in the Peloponnese, Evia and Crete in the highlands.

Specifically, according to the latest forecast data from meteo.gr / Athens National Observatory, despite the improvement in the weather today Sunday in a large part of the country, the bad weather is expected to persist in the south and southeast.

For the rest of the day, snowfall is expected in mountainous areas of Sterea and Peloponnese until the early evening hours while rainfall will occur in lower altitude areas of the above areas. At the same time, rainfall and storms will also occur in the Central and South Aegean. The phenomena from the first evening hours will be mainly limited to Crete and the southern parts of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. Alongside, problems in maritime transport have been caused by gale force winds while the temperature has plummeted across the country. Specifically, the stormy northerlies winds (7 to 9 Beaufort) will prevail in the Aegean, while in the Ionian the easterly winds will reach 6 to 7 Beaufort in places.

However, the problems caused by the snowfall in several parts of the road network in Northern Greece have now been remedied.

The temperature will show a further fall and from the evening there will be frost in places even in low altitude areas of the central and northern country.

The prohibition of sailing from the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio is in force, due to the strong winds in sea areas, which reach 9 Beaufort in places in the Aegean, according to the National Meteorological Service.

There are also no hydrofoil routes for Argosaronicos.

Road traffic is restored after the snowfall

The situation on the roads of Western Macedonia is improving after the heavy snowfall during the evening hours

The General Police Directorate of Western Macedonia will proceed with the lifting of the ban on the traffic of all lorries, with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons, along Egnatia Street, from Polymylo Kozani to Panagia Grevenon.

The “green light” for the traffic of car trucks is also given on the vertical axes, Siatista – Krystallopigi and Kozani – Florina – Nikis Customs, while the traffic of trucks is also allowed on the Kozani – Larissa National Road. Snowfalls began to recede in the early hours of the morning, while at this time they have stopped in most lowland areas of western Macedonia, sparse snowfall prevails only in the mountains, especially above 1200 meters altitude.

The movement of vehicles on Egnatia road and on the vertical axes is carried out normally, while chains or special snow tires are needed in some parts of the mountainous provincial network of Kozani, Florina, Grevena and Kastoria. From the Civil Protection of the Region of Western Macedonia, drivers are advised to be especially careful regarding the slippery roads because the temperatures that will prevail throughout the region will be well below zero.

The General Regional Police Directorate of Western Macedonia announces that it is mandatory to equip cars of all categories with anti-skid chains or other similar anti-skid means.
