The then regional governor, Rena Dourou, tried to place the blame on the staff of the Fire Brigade and Civil Protection and other relevant services. for late informing then Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras about the dead from the deadly fire in Mati.
Apologizing for the second day, Rena Dourou to trial for the tragedy in Mati with 104 deadthe dozens of burn victims and the incalculable damages, was reported to much sought after meeting that took place on the night of the fire, in the presence of the then prime minister and was broadcast by the media, where nothing was reported about dead people, while from the statements of dozens of witnesses at the trial, it emerged that the then government could not possibly not knowas the competent services knew early on the existence of the dead.
The defendant claimed in her statement, that that night when she was at ESKE, from 20:00 and everyone was telling her that things were difficult, when the briefing of the Prime Minister began, according to Mrs. Douros, the briefing on the prevailing situation was not detailed.
“My sense is that they knew but were afraid to describe the tragedy of the situation. We have a disaster in Mati and the briefing of the Prime Minister starts with the fire in Zemenos. Not a word was said about the dead. From then until today I am trying to understand why there was this briefing… I can’t understand why it happened like that since the dead were a matter of time as they happened to be revealed” said Rena Dourou in her apology.
In her apology Ms. Douro also claimed that in none of the phone calls she had with the Deputy Chief of the Fire Department was anything requested from the District.
“At 7.21 I called Nico Tosca. I ask him what’s going on. He answers me that things are difficult and an attempt is made to save the world.I express my concern about the blurry picture and the many fires. He told me that they did not need anything from the District..I went to the ESKE offices to get a better picture. The situation was out of control. The district is not expected nor could it help in the rescue work. But we ourselves were asking if we could do something. Arriving at ESKE they did not allow me to enter the operations room. I saw Tosca and he told me that the situation is difficult, that they are trying to save the world and told me I don’t want anything from you, sit down and we’ll see. It was 8.25 when the regional councilor was informed about the front of the fire.During the time I was there I asked and we asked whoever passed by the same anxious questions and they gave me the same answer that things are difficult.”
Mrs. Dourou described how that evening what he remembers is that “there was fear, anxiety, iciness. And it was very evident in the atmosphere that something tragic, if it hadn’t already happened, was going to happen…My anxiety for information was about the number of affected people that we would have to take care of. Around 9.30 I attended a meeting, although the Regional Governor of Attica is not a member. Even at that time it was not possible to know what the real picture and situation was. If the fire had reached the sea and was extinguished at sea… I informed about the care of the affected people.
