The memories from the martyrdom of the student Eleni Topaloudi in November 2018 come to the fore today by two of her almost peers who raped her and threw her after being beaten wildly but alive on a rocky beach in the area of Lindos in Rhodes.
The case is being heard today at the Mixed Jury Court of Appeals, which, once the trial begins, will decide whether the two perpetrators of the heinous murder will be sentenced to a shorter sentence or whether the sentence of life and an additional 15 years in prison will remain the same. two years ago by the trial court. The court ruled that the two convicts were not entitled to any mitigation.
Accused of brutal abuse and subsequent murder of Eleni Topaloudi are two young people aged 24 and 22 today, who were permanent residents of Rhodes. The eldest, a member of a wealthy family on the island and the youngest, the son of a craftsman from Albania. The two friends had a common interest in martial arts. The youngest has been involved in another case of rape of a young girl with special needs, which was allegedly committed a few days after Topaloudi’s murder.
The thread that revealed the crime, began to unfold on the afternoon of November 28, 2018 when a couple of locals found that a lifeless body of a woman was floating on Fokia beach in Rhodes. The medical examiner ruled that the young woman, before being found in the water, had been badly beaten and that it was a criminal act. The body was identified. It belonged to Eleni Topaloudi, a student of Mediterranean Studies at the University of the Aegean. The investigation of the Coast Guard revealed the youngest of the two perpetrators, of Albanian origin, with whom the student met on the night in question. He led the second perpetrator with his testimony. The circumstances of the student’s death shocked not only the local community but the whole country. The student had been raped and horribly abused.
As the medical examiner Panagiotis Kotretsos, who received the body of Eleni Topaloudi, testified in the first instance court, the victim had been brutally tortured before being found unconscious in the water. It is typical for what the body of the victim “revealed”, the answer that Mr. Kotretsos had given to a note of the Headquarters that the two perpetrators invoke for the rape, consent of the victim: “There is no consent to death. To do these things “Things are not just his deceit to have sex. It is something that escapes even extreme human behavior. It gives me the impression that the perpetrator considers it the right practice and it is not something we say has escaped.”
The referral panel of the Council of Criminal Procedure of Rhodes describes the wild, literally martyrdom moments that the student went through in the hands of the two young men sentenced to life imprisonment while she was at the cottage of the oldest perpetrator, in the area of Lindos.
The judges detail that Eleni’s refusal to have sex with them sparked extreme reactions: she was threatened with a knife and hit in the face repeatedly with brutal punches by the two young men who raped her.
According to the panel, Topaloudi “regained consciousness after a while, told the defendants her intention to report them to the police, thus sparking their anger and at the same time their concern that they will be arrested and will be punished for the above behavior.” In view of this unpleasant prospect for them, the defendants then proceeded to weigh the data and jointly decided to physically exterminate the victim … causing severe bleeding … and they also tried to kill her by strangulation “. The defendants, despite the calls of the injured Eleni to take her to the hospital, “showed obsession with their criminal planning and transported her naked to the car in order to complete the pre-determined crime of murder”.
The accused went to a rocky beach in the area of Lindos and threw the exhausted and already severely beaten Eleni on the cliff, from a height of about 10 meters above the sea. The girl’s battle was now unequal as her serious injuries “made it impossible for her to move effectively to float effectively”. The death of Eleni Topaloudi “occurred as a result of drowning”.
The medical examiner told the first instance court that if Eleni Topaloudi had been taken to hospital after the inferno, she would probably have lived.
In their apologies before the Mixed Jury Court, the two defendants had blamed each other for what happened in Lindos’s house, each holding for himself the position of the shocked by the other, who was immobilized for fear and did not was able to prevent what happened to the 21-year-old. Both claimed that they had sex with the consent of the victim and that the explosion came when Eleni praised the erotic performance of one of them. Something that the two perpetrators seem to have done from the beginning: “They were telling us the same story by putting each other in the place of the protagonist,” one of the Coast Guard officers who examined the two young men had told the court.
The trial in the case is expected to last several days.
