The trial for the rape and brutal murder of Eleni Topaloudi in November 2018, which is being heard in the second instance, was suspended for March 10, following a request by the defense.
The case was heard and the court proceeded to draw the jury with only one present, of Greek origin, accused and absent of co-accused of Albanian origin.
The defense of the accused of Albanian origin, requested an adjournment of the trial as one of his lawyers was recently appointed by the 22-year-old and said that he wants time to study the case.
The acceptance of the request by the court, which gave the next trial on March 10, caused great tension from the parents of the victim who angrily shouted that the accused were making fun of them.
Eleni’s mother, Koula Topaloudi, in a state of rage, shouted that with the tactics of the defense, they themselves are suffering from the constant travels from Didymoteicho, where they live, to Athens.

At the entrance of the courthouse, dozens of members of women’s organizations had gathered since the morning in support of the victims. In banners they had posted, they reiterated their request for the murder of women to be identified as a special crime.
The two perpetrators have been sentenced at first instance to life imprisonment and an additional 15 years in prison. The court in the first instance ruled that the two convicts are not entitled to any mitigation.
