A huge fish – a giant “king herring” – was recently spotted by divers off the coast of Thailand.

The fish is also called the “Fish of the Apocalypse” as the locals believe it is related to earthquake predictions and consider it an ominous sign, according to Japanese mythology

Its size and shape resembles a sea snake while the king herring (Oarfish, scientifically Regalecus glesne), is the longest bony fish on record, with references even in ancient texts.

A giant “king herring” was first filmed by researchers in the Gulf of Mexico between 2008-2011.

The length of the fish can exceed fifteen meters, and the weight 250 kg, while the thickness of its body does not exceed 10 centimeters.

It has a silver-white color and lives at great depths in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

The species Regalecus glesne is actually unrelated to herrings. In the past it was also called “sea reptile” because of its elongated shape and serpentine movement.
