The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas met today with the President of the KO of the “New Left”, Alexis Haritsis and the Parliamentary Representative, Nasos Iliopoulos.

The discussion focused on the need to strengthen the autonomy of local government, in order to be able to respond to modern challenges and find solutions to citizens’ problems. Among the issues raised were the promotion of energy democracy, the strengthening of accountability, the increase of citizen participation in making important decisions and the co-shaping of joint actions and initiatives in self-government.

After the end of the meeting, Harry Doukas he pointed out: “We had a very constructive discussion. We presented our positions and proposals for strengthening the autonomy of self-government. Decentralization is very important, so that we can create a new development model in the country as a whole, which will give more say to the citizens, more power. By coordinating common actions we can face the real problems that are too many today. We were able to discuss the detailed actions that are on our agenda in view of the crucial claim that we have before us for the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece”.

From the side of Alexis Haritsis asserted: “I would like to thank the Mayor of Athens for the very detailed and documented information he gave us as well as the discussion we had about all the big and small issues of the first municipality of the country, the municipality of Athens. I believe that it is very important to be informed and to discuss issues concerning the daily life of citizens, the quality of life, but also a different perception of how, through decentralization and through the support of local and municipal initiatives, the lives of citizens can be improved citizens. The “New Left” will stand by and support every progressive effort that moves in this direction. I am sure that in the future we will have the opportunity to have a very constructive cooperation for the good of the self-government, for the good of the citizens of Athens”.
