Charalambos Feidas, Professor of the Geology Department of the School of Positive Sciences, was appointed as the new rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The electoral process was completed today, Wednesday, February 7, 2024, and was carried out by secret ballot and electronically, through the special information system “ZEUS Digital Ballot Box”.

At the Meeting of the Administrative Council of AUTH, the candidates received the following votes:

Professor of the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences Kyriakos Anastasiadis: 2 votes.

Professor of the Department of Spatial Planning and Development Engineering of the Polytechnic School Efstratios Stylianidis: 2 votes.

Professor of the Department of Geology of the School of Positive Sciences Charalambos Feidas: 6 votes.

Biography of the new rector

Charalambos Feidas was born in N. Aghialos of Volos in 1968, where he finished high school in 1985.

He received his Bachelor’s degree in Physics (1991) and then obtained a Master’s Degree in Meteorology (1993) and a PhD in Satellite Meteorology (1999), from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens.

From 2008 he served as an Assistant Professor, from 2013 as an Associate Professor and from 2017 as a Professor at the Department of Geology of AUTH in the subject of Meteorology with an emphasis on Satellite Meteorology and Climatology.

He has worked as a collaborating researcher at the Physics Department of the University of Athens (1996-1999) and at the National Observatory of Athens (1999-2000). From 2000 to 2008 he served as Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean in the subject of Physical Geography-Climatology.

He is married and has three children.

His research interests focus on applications of satellite remote sensing for environmental research with emphasis on atmosphere, weather and climate, regional climate change, climate services and applied climatology.

He has published 46 papers in scientific journals, 11 book chapters and 47 papers in conference proceedings. He participated in a large number of European and national research programs in 14 of which as a scientific manager. He teaches courses in Meteorology and Climatology in three departments of AUTH and in two PMS.

He has published articles and given many interviews on higher education and scientific topics related to weather and climate.

He is the Vice Chancellor of Finance, Planning and Development of the University of Athens. (2019-2023) while he served as President (2017-19) and Deputy President of the Geology Department (2015-17), Director of the Meteorology and Climatology Department (2016-17) and Director of the “Meteorology, Climatology and Atmospheric Environment” (2013) -16).

He was also President (2015-19) and Treasurer (2013-15) of the Board of Directors of the ESDEP of AUTH as well as Secretary (2017-19) and member of the Executive Secretariat of POSDEP (2013-19).
