The EU’s determination to tackle cancer was underlined by the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakidou, speaking at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
“Today is the World Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day. I pay tribute to the children, their parents, their siblings, their families “said Ms. Kyriakidou and added that” in order to support young people whose lives have been affected by cancer, we have launched an EU Youth Network that “They have gone beyond Cancer to connect them with their families, as well as with health professionals working in cancer prevention and care across the EU.”
“We are determined to successfully treat cancerto strengthen prevention, treatment and care, to eliminate inequalities, to improve research and to make a difference in the lives of citizens through cooperation “, he underlined.
“Stella Kyriakidou noted that this is the first time that Europe has a Plan with 4 billion euros at its disposal for its actions and a Plan that examines the whole picture”.
The European Commissioner pointed out that prevention is the most effective way to deal with it cancer “We need to give people the tools and information they need to live a healthy life – and that is why we will update the European Cancer Code. “This will give citizens informed and understandable recommendations on how they can reduce the risk of cancer.”
At the same time, he stated that the second area that concerns prevention and in which “we will work intensively this year is the updating of the Recommendation for the screening of cancer. “Screening saves lives and we will ensure that citizens across the EU can benefit from our future EU-supported cancer screening program.”
Another important goal of the cancer plan is to ensure that all patients across the EU, regardless of their place of residence, have access to diagnosis and treatment, he noted.
“It is simply unacceptable that your place of residence in the EU determines your access to early diagnosis, treatment and level of care,” she said. Finally, Ms. Kyriakidou referred to the importance of quality of life and social inclusion.
