Botox: Dermatologist’s advice for best results

by

Although it is one of the most popular anti-aging treatments, there is not much we know about Botox.

That’s why we talked to the dermatologist-venereologist Dr. Valia Mousatou, who solved all our questions.

What is Botox?

Treatment with botulinum toxin type A (commonly known as Botox), is one of the most popular treatments for the prevention and correction of expression wrinkles of the upper part of the face.

In my opinion, this treatment is irreplaceable.

It usually affects the forehead, middle eye and goose foot areas, while it is also applied to the neck, nose and occasionally. Nevertheless, the most spectacular results are in the upper face. Of course the medical applications of the drug are many. The most common are hyperhidrosis, rabies, tension headaches, overactive bladder and it is even applied to the stomach to reduce weight. Currently, there are 4 commercial formulations in Greece (Botox, dysport, vistabel, dysline), all approved for application against wrinkles.

How does Botox work?

The action of the drug is to cause relaxation of the muscles, which moving, create the unwanted wrinkle. The face looks more relaxed, younger and renewed while the skin stretches around the wrinkles. The duration of reduced mobility is around 4 months. After this period, the muscle returns to its previous state. When the treatment is repeated regularly, we have the benefit of prevention as we prevent the wrinkle from deepening from the constant movement. That’s why it’s good to start at an early age, before the expression wrinkles become permanent.

What can one do after Botox for better and longer lasting results?

The advice we give for a longer duration of treatment effect is to avoid heat in contact with the face in the first days after treatment. For example, it is good to avoid the use of hair dryers near the forehead, steam cleansing, sauna, etc.

We also advise to avoid, as much as possible, the voluntary movement of the forehead muscles. We want to avoid mobilizing them prematurely and “learning” the movements of denial and frown that cause wrinkles. Another tip for Botox / dysport to last is to avoid zinc supplements, as it inactivates the drug. Finally, there are creams with biomimetic action of the drug that theoretically help the effect to last longer.

Is it true that it is good to avoid the following activities in the first 24 hours after Botox?

1. Intense exercise 2. Makeup 3. Some treatment in the same area (eg laser or peel on the face)

Starting with intense exercise, it can be done the next day, but avoiding high temperatures. Going forward, there is no problem in makeup, as long as we do not rub the treatment areas when applying make up. Regarding lasers, it is good to precede (same day) Botox because they raise the temperature. Alternatively, they can be done 15 days later. Finally, there is no restriction on light peels. However, it is best to do it before Botox so that the skin does not sting too much at the injection site.
