Efstratia Mavrapidou, one of the three grandmothers of Sykamnia, died today at the age of 96. of the world, being the occasion to be nominated for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize.
The three women continued to do the same for a long time, offering what they could to the refugees, all the while their village became the focus of the refugee-humanitarian crisis.
Of the three grandmothers, Maritsa Mavrapidou was the first to die in January 2019 at the age of 92, while Emilia Kamvisi is 92 years old today.
Children of refugees from Asia Minor, all three of them, were a symbol of the solidarity of the people of Lesvos with the hundreds of thousands of Syrians – in their vast majority – refugees, who spent the two years 2015-2016 from the opposite coast on the island. The “grandmothers of Lesvos” were visited and honored in November 2015, by the then President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos and on August 15, 2020, by the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
“Why do you say well done my son? What did I do;” they had told the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, when a journalist had visited them in Skala Sykamnia on the day their candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize was announced, in January 2016. When asked why they help the refugees, the grandmothers had answered: children are. “Sometimes tired from the trip, they help me carry the wood for my stove.”
