In the 30-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Mixed Jury Court of Giannitsa which, on New Year’s Eve last year, threw her 11-month-old baby into the icy waters of the artificial lake of Aliakmonas, in Imathia, as a result of which he died by suffocation. The Criminal Court found her guilty for the death of her daughter, but recognized, by a majority of 6-1, that she committed an act with reduced attribution.

As it emerged during the hearing, the accused had a history of hospitalization in psychiatric facilities, while the mental problems were confirmed by relevant expert reports carried out in the context of the main investigation. According to what has become known, the controversial period in which she committed the homicide had interrupted her medication.

In her apology she confessed to the crime, while reading a letter she wrote to her daughter from the Eleonas Thebes prison where she is being held.

According to the case file, the 30-year-old had left on New Year’s Eve with the infant from the village of Stavros Imathia, where she lived with her relatives, and returned the next day without the child. The police were notified, investigations began and the infant was eventually found dead on one bank of the dam. He initially denied the charge, claiming it was an accident, a claim he retracted when, by order of the investigator Verias, an expert opinion was ordered at the scene of the crime.
