Supply contract 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) modular buses18 meters long, which will be launched in Athens, was signed today by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras and the Head of Europe Commercial Operations of Iveco Bus, Giorgio Zino.

“We estimate that, by 2025, all of these vehicles will be circulating on the streets of Athens,” said the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, during the contract signing ceremony.

Mr. Staikouras referred in detail to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport’s planning for the renewal of the bus fleet in Athens and Thessaloniki.

In addition, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport pointed out “We have set the goal of launching the supply of 1,300 new buses with modern anti-pollution technology, which are going to upgrade urban transport in Athens and Thessaloniki. An essential step is today’s signing of the Contract for the supply of 100 18-meter modular urban vehicles, compressed natural gas (CNG)”.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Transport, Christina Alexopoulou, said “The goal of the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, as defined by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is to improve the daily life of the citizen. With today’s signing of the contract for the supply of 100 buses, 18 meter articulated, compressed natural gas, we are taking another step towards achieving this specific goal. We are upgrading Urban Transport, strengthening Sustainable Urban Mobility and essentially changing the page in Transport. In conjunction with the supply of 250 electric buses, which in a few months will be circulating on the streets of Athens and Thessaloniki, we aspire to create a greener and more sustainable era in transportation, which will contribute decisively to the change of citizens’ culture”.

The general secretary of Transport, Yiannis Xifaras emphasized “The bus fleet is being completely renewed. The signing of the contract for the supply of 100 modular buses is just a step towards the complete upgrade of Athens’ urban transport. However, it is a particularly important step because it comes to renew the most damaged part of the fleet, which are the 18-meter articulated buses, which run many kilometers every day on the city’s roads.”

The Head of Europe Commercial Operations of Iveco Bus, Giorgio Zino, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the procurement process of the new buses, speaking of a great innovation, important for citizens. “We are taking a step forward regarding the environment, as the vehicles are fully ecological and we look forward to cooperation in the future,” added Mr. Zino.
