27% of women aged 15 to 49 in the world – more than one in four – have experienced physical and / or sexual violence from their partner at some point in their lives. 13% – one in seven women – have experienced this violence in the last year. This is shown by a large international study, the most comprehensive of its kind to date, published in the medical journal The Lancet.

Research reveals that partner violence usually starts early and is prevalent even at younger ages, with 24% of women aged 15-19 having been abused at least once. Violence – physical, sexual and psychological – against women affects married women, those who live together and those who have had a partner for years, while it can have long-term effects on the physical and mental health of victims.

Leading researcher Claudia Garcia-Moreno of the World Health Organization said that “although progress has been made over the last 20 years, it is generally insufficient to meet the target of violence against women by 2030. affects the lives of millions of women, children, families and societies worldwide. “

The study analyzed data for 161 countries with a total of more than two billion women over the age of 15 (over 90% of the world’s female population). It is estimated that in one year, about half a billion women are subjected to some form of violence by their partners.

The highest rates of violence against women are recorded in Oceania (49%) and Central Sub-Saharan Africa (44%), while the lowest are recorded in Central Asia (18%) and Southern Europe (16%). In general, the more developed high-income countries have lower rates of violence than the low- and middle-income countries. Across Europe, violence is estimated at 20% of women, compared with 25% in the Americas, 27% in Asia and 33% in Africa.

In Greece (based on data for 2018) it appears that 18% of women have suffered violence from a partner during their lifetime, while 5% in the last year. By comparison, the respective percentages are 16% and 3% for Cyprus, 16% and 4% for Italy, 22% and 5% for France, 24% and 4% for Britain and 32% and 12% for Turkey. (where the problem is obviously big).
