1896: Charilaos Vasilakos wins the first modern Marathon, with 3 hours and 18 minutes, during the First Panhellenic Athletics Games.

1905: The Cretan Revolution breaks out in the village of Therisos, led by Eleftherios Venizelos. The activists with their memorandum to the great powers ask for the Union of Crete with Greece. The English fleet heads for the island.

1923: Tragic shipwreck occurs in Saronic. The mandatory lifeboat “Alexandros Z” sinks near Psittalia, as a result of which more than 150 officers and sailors drown.

1925: The Olympic Fan Association of Piraeus is founded by members of the Piraeus Football Club and the Piraeus Fan Club.

1944: The creation of the Political Committee for National Liberation (PEEA), also known as the “government of the mountains”, during the Occupation is announced. Its temporary president is colonel Evripidis Bakirtzis, formerly a representative of the resistance organization EKKA, and its members are Emmanuel Mantakas (ELAS), Giorgis Siandos (KKE), Ilias Tsirimokos (ELD), Costas Gavrielidis (Agrarian Party) and the professor of constitutional law Alexandros Svolos, who a few days later will take over as president of PEEA.

2015: The proposal of the president of the House, Zois Konstantopoulou, for the reconstitution and upgrading of the Inter-Party Committee for the claim of German reparations, the repayment of the occupying loan and the return of the stolen archaeological treasures gathers the unanimous support of the Hellenic Parliament.

1970: Vassilis Avlonitis, Greek popular actor. He was one of the most important members of the so-called light theater and one of the leading “typists” of the Greek scene. (Born 1/1/1904)

1992: Giorgos Zampetas, Greek folk composer and bouzouki virtuoso. (Born 25/1/1925)

2012: Domna Samiou, Greek performer and researcher of folk song, with international recognition. (Born 12/10/1928)
