The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection referred to the women and men of the Fire Brigade as well as to the contribution of Civil Protection volunteers to the protection of human lives Vassilis Kikiliasin the context of his speech at an educational day by EMAK and EMODE firefighters (forest commander) to students of the Athens College.

“You can become a volunteer of the Fire Department, get trained and be a part of them. You can become a Civil Protection volunteer and in your place, in your area, in your neighborhood, in your holiday home, contribute to it. You may not volunteer. Find out within yourself today, and when you see any danger take out your cell phone and alert, don’t ignore and alert us. This will help to save a human life or many. This, for each and every one of you until the end of his life, will be deeply engraved in his mind” said Mr. Kikilias.

The minister stressed that young people should be sensitized and mobilized in the effort to fight the climate crisis, in an effort that all of us should make to manage the extreme weather phenomena that affect the entire planet.

He also spoke about the difficult work of the country’s 16,000 firefighters, who risk their lives to rescue citizens affected by natural disasters. “The men and women of the Fire Department are different from all of us because we know, and our families know, that in the morning we will go to work or school and at night we will return home safely. But for these people, their chosen profession, which in my view is a job, includes the following: they go to work every day when there are fires, floods, critical incidents where they have to do ground and air rescue, and it is not certain whether they will return home in the evening. To protect all the rest of us” underlined Mr. Kikilias and added that it is a job of responsibility. “Their work is patriotic. They fight every day for us, summer and winter,” the minister emphasized.

Afterwards, Mr. Kikilias asked the students to call 199 or 112 in case they are in a peri-urban-environmental area in Attica and see something that they feel is strange or constitutes a danger, such as smoke. “When you see any danger, I want you to take out your mobile phone and call 199 or 112, the pan-European emergency number. The notification through this is two-way from the citizen to the Fire Department and from the Fire Department to the citizen” pointed out Mr. Kikilias.
