WRC: Canary Islands to host race in 2025

by

The Canary Islands will host his match World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2025, as part of a new two-year deal that brings Spain back onto the WRC calendar. The “Rally Islas Canarias”, which was first held in 1977, has been on the European Rally Championship (ERC) schedule since 2016. Now the asphalt race will jump to the WRC calendar for 2025 and 2026, if it gives the its relative approval by the World Council of Motor Sports.

The development follows a similar move by the WRC to move the Rally Latvia and Poland from the ERC to the WRC for the current season, while the news ensures that Spain will once again be part of the WRC as the Catalunya Rally was “cut” from the calendar after the 2022 race.

The announcement of the Canary Islands Rally comes at a time when the WRC has been inundated with proposals from various countries wishing to join the racing programme. It is expected that the championship will expand to 14 races next year, although it is unclear which Rally the Canary Islands will replace. Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Paraguay and Argentina are understood to be in contention for a place on the 2025 calendar, with a decision on the future of those fixtures expected in the coming months. In the past the WRC people have revealed the certainty that a race in the Middle East will be included in next year’s schedule.

The championship promoter also traveled to Ireland in February to inspect the sites proposed to host the WRC from 2025-2027. Ireland’s candidacy depends on securing €15 million in government funding.

In addition, the United States has begun a bid to join the league, but aims to secure a spot for the 2026 event.
