At the Three-member Court of Criminal Appeals of Ioannina, the hearing of the case of the former First Instance Prosecutor and head of the Corfu First Instance Prosecutor’s Office Maria Tatakis begins today Tuesday for criminal abuse of power and for the embezzlement of public documents.

This is the case that was revealed in 2019 and is related to the then judicial officer’s removal of thousands of case files from her service, resulting in the statute of limitations of thousands of offences, felonies and misdemeanors.

The accused by decision of the Plenary of the Supreme Court, on April 14, 2022, dismissed from the Corps without right to work.

Let us remind you that approximately 1,000 of the above documents, ready, according to her confession, to be burned, were found in her friend’s warehouse in the village of Garouna, Corfu, while others were in the house where she herself lived.

Until today, the fate of 156 case files is unknown. Along with the former prosecutor, the deputy head of the Secretariat Directorate of the aforementioned service is also a co-accused, for complicity in the criminal act.

Legal circles consider that the trial is of particular interest, since it is also characterized by another peculiarity. According to reliable information, they have never been summoned for examination by the then Special Appellate Investigator of Corfu and therefore will not be summoned to court, the victims in the above time-barred cases.
