With witness statements, the trial of the former First Instance Prosecutor and head of the Corfu First Instance Prosecutor’s Office, Maria Tatakis, began at 9 am at the Three-Member Court of Criminal Appeals of Ioannina, who is accused of “felonious abuse of power in a true and real manner” and of “embezzlement of public documents serial”.
The case was revealed in 2019, when the judicial scandal unfolded by the then Corfu Appeals Prosecutor Vassiliki Christouli. As revealed, the accused removed thousands of case files from her service, resulting in the statute of limitations for misdemeanors, felonies and misdemeanors.
About 1,000 of the case files they had been found in her friend’s warehouse in the village of Garouna, Corfu, while others in the house where she lived. During the hearing, the defense witnesses of Mrs. Tatakis, who are current and former employees of the courts of Corfu, testified, among other things, that there was a heavy workload, staff shortages, problems with computerization and that is why the processing of case files was delayed and lawsuits, without however giving clarifications, why the files were found in a farmhouse in Corfu.
It should be noted that the fate of 156 criminal case files is still unknown.
The defendant, by decision of the Plenary of the Supreme Court, on April 14, 2022, was dismissed from the House, without the right to work. The trial was adjourned and will resume on Tuesday, April 16.
