One macabre as unprecedented episode between relatives at the time of the burial of their loved one, occupied the judges of the Three-member Criminal Court of Thessaloniki.

One was found in the defendant’s dock 60 years oldwhich on time funeral of his brother, reacting to a sentence previously uttered by bride of him and which he considered offensive to the deceased, he grabbed one marble cross from an adjacent grave hitting the woman on the head.

The court found him guilty of domestic dangerous bodily harm and sentenced him to 5 months in prison, suspended for 3 years, recognizing two mitigating factors: on the one hand, his previous cohabitation and, on the other hand, that he was motivated by justified indignation, which was caused by the bride’s inappropriate behavior of.

The episode happened in November 2021, in the cemeteries of a village located in eastern Thessaloniki.

During the evidentiary process it emerged that the relations between the two “protagonists” were strained.

What allegedly caused the 60-year-old defendant’s reaction was one phrase which the woman uttered at the time of the burial. “I forgive you for what you have done to me, may God forgive you…” the bride was quoted as saying in court.

Her accused brother-in-law, for his part, denied the act, claiming that his daughter-in-law, after uttering the disputed sentence, ran away, with the result that she lost her balance and fell into a nearby grave.

The 60-year-old filed an appeal against the decision to be decided by the appellate court.

In addition to the criminal treatment of the accused, the court was asked to decide on the fate of the marble cross – which was the means of carrying out the act – and which had been confiscated as part of the preliminary investigation. The judges decided, therefore, that it should be given to the rightful owners of the tomb.
