Sewage: Declining trends in the viral load of the country – Marginal decline in Attica and Thessaloniki

by

In the week of 14 to 20 February 2022 they were observed declining trendsin relation to the week 7 to 13 February 2022, in the average weekly viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in urban wastewater in seven of the thirteen (7/13) areas controlled by the National Network of Wastewater Epidemiology (EDEL) of EODY , upward trends in five of the thirteen regions of EDEL and stabilizing trends in one of the thirteen regions controlled by EDEL.

Net declining trends observed in Patras (-48%), Rethymno (-41%) and Corfu (-70%), while the decline was marginal in Thessaloniki (-24%), Agios Nikolaos (-16%), Attica ( -15%) and in Ioannina (-11%).

Net upward trends were observed in Xanthi (+ 46%), Alexandroupolis (+ 34%) and Heraklion (+ 30%), while the increases were marginal in Larissa (+ 12%) and Chania (+ 13%). The viral load of urban wastewater remained virtually stable in Volos (+ 4%).

Region of Attica: Last week, the average weekly viral load in the urban wastewater of the Attica Region remained stablewith a statistically insignificant decrease (-15%) of the weekly average, compared to the previous week.

Thessaloniki: Last week, the weekly average value of the viral load of urban wastewater in Thessaloniki presented marginal reduction (-24%). The viral load of the city is at high levels.

The Delta strain from February 9 onwards is detected at the limit of the analytical sensitivity of the method, while its frequency in relation to Omicron has been reduced below 2% and can no longer be accurately estimated.

Larissa: In the last week, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater in Larissa showed a marginal increase (+ 12%) compared to the week 07-13 / 02/22.

Marble: In the last week, the average weekly viral load of urban wastewater in Volos remained stable (+ 4%) compared to the week 07-13 / 02/22.

The results of the laboratory tests of the National Network of Sewage Epidemiology for the epidemiological surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in urban wastewater, which operates under the coordination of EODY, are announced. The samples come from the Attica Region and the cities of Thessaloniki, Larissa, Volos, Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos Lassithi, Patras, Xanthi, Alexandroupolis, Ioannina and Corfu. The samples are taken from the entrances of the local Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWUs) and correspond to the population served by them. Table 1: Percentage change in the mean concentration of SARS-CoV-2 viral load in urban wastewater per 100,000 inhabitants per week 14-20 / 02/22 compared to the week 07-13 / 02/22.
