Six years after the devastating fire that swept through the Eye, today the judiciary will give its first answer to the “blame them” for the unimaginable tragedy with the 104 dead.
The Three-member Misdemeanor Court will announce in the morning the decision of for them 21 defendantsthen Fire Department officers, the then regional governor of Attica and the then mayors of the municipalities affected by the fire, who after a prosecutorial investigation are on trial for actions and omissions before, during and after the fire that left behind pain and destruction .
The judges after a process in the audience that lasted about a year and a half evaluated it thousands of pages of materialwhat, the dozens of witness statements, some of them shocking, the positions of the experts on critical issues, the apologies of the accused, the prosecutor’s proposal and the positions of the defense attorneys.
In the conferences that preceded today’s meeting, the judges examined all the facts and every aspect of the case in combination with the legal framework under which “the deadly fire in Mati” is judged, so that today they will announce their judgment on the persons who were called to manage a fire that turned into the biggest tragedy the country has experienced in recent decades.
The court studied her proposal of the Prosecutor Panagiotis Maniatis and the legal rationale he developed for each defendant and the provisions that define his powers and scope of action.
With today’s decision, it will be seen whether the court adopted the prosecutor’s reasoning as to the guilty and the innocent, or whether the judges have differed in their assessment.
If the judges agree with Mr. Maniatis, then nine defendants will hear today the “guilty» and twelve those who will leave declared innocent.
The prosecuting officer, last February, asked to be found guilty of manslaughter by serial negligence and by omission as well as for serial bodily harm the:

* Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, then Commander of the Athens Fire Services
* Charalambos Chionis then Commander of Eastern Attica Fire Services
* Vaios Thanasias then deputy mayor of Marathon municipality
* Evangelos Bournous then mayor of Rafina-Pikermio
* Antonis Palpatzis then deputy mayor of Rafina – Pikermiou
Dau Pentelis resident Konstantinos Angelopoulos, whose yard started the fire, also pleaded guilty to negligent arson.
According to the Prosecutor, he must get rid of the then executives of the Fire Department Christos Golfinos, Filippos Pandeleakos, Damianos Papadopoulos, Christos Lambris, Christos Drosopoulos, Georgios Portozoudis and Stefanos Kolokouris. Also the then officer in the Aerial Media of ELAS Charalambos Syrogiannis.
At the same time he asked to be acquitted the then general secretary of Civil Protection Ioannis Kapakis, the then regional governor of Attica Rena Dourou and the then mayors of Marathon Ilias Psinakis and Pentelis Dimitrios-Stergios Kapsalis.
