What does the chairman of the breeders, Mr. Terzakis, say about the Volos market
Cattle breeders in Magnesia are complaining of unfair competition with the market for Easter ovelia, which they say has been overrun by Romanian lambs.
Traders, taking advantage of the legislation that sees the stamp of origin of the animal as optional, bring lambs from the neighboring country and distribute them to butchers as Greek.
The president of the breeders, Mr. Terzakis, stated that in the market of Volos, 50% of the butchers sell imported offal for local animals at 15.50-16 euros per kilo.
“They bought them for less than 9 euros and sell them for 16 euros per kilo. It is a fraud and we have asked for checks on both the Greekizations and the profiteering. 50% of the butchers thus meet the needs of Easter and this is at the expense of farmers and consumers. We are not at liberty to release names, but this is happening. The checks started todayi”. he stated to gegonota news.
The selling price of the Romanian lamb is around 4.5 euros, as the Romanians, due to the mild winter, had enough lambs available and in fact in the desired – for the Greek market – kilograms (8 to 10), with the result that in Thessaly the traders make golden jobs and the livestock farmers who lost 80,000 animals to the floods to perish.
