Firecrackers from Poland ordered ahead of Easter a 50-year-old woman in Thessaloniki, but he was arrested while receiving the parcel, containing the illegal goods, by police officers who pretended to be couriers.

There had previously been a complaint about a suspicious package that arrived in the previous 24 hours from abroad and was located in a courier store, with a 50-year-old woman as the recipient. Inside the parcel were a total of 113 firecrackers, as stated in a Police announcement.

Subsequently, an operation was organized by police officers of the Weapons and Explosives Department of the State Security Directorate of Thessaloniki, which led to the arrest of the 50-year-old woman while receiving the prohibited pyrotechnic articles.

A case was filed against the woman for violation of the legislation on flares and fireworks.

In the meantime, EL.AS. intensifies checks to deal with the trafficking and use of illegal firecrackers, children’s firecrackers, flares and other pyrotechnics during the Easter period and reminds through a statement that the burning of flares is prohibited, as well as the manufacture, trade, purchase, possession and use of firecrackers, firecrackers and any type of pyrotechnics without a permit.

“Sparklers and fireworks are not toys, but extremely dangerous materials and their use poses risks to physical integrity and life itself,” states the same statement, while appealing to parents of minors to prevent their children from using or their improvised construction and to inform them of the risks of serious injury, even amputation.
