Increase in fatal traffic accidents in April 2024 compared to the corresponding month of 2023 in six prefectures of K. Macedonia
More than twice as many fatal traffic accidents occurred in six prefectures of Central Macedonia during April 2024 compared to the corresponding month of 2023. Specifically last April in the territorial jurisdiction of the Police Departments of Imathia, Kilkis, Pella, Pieria, Serres and Halkidiki there were 34 traffic incidents of which 9 fatal, while in the corresponding month of 2023 there were 28 traffic accidents of which 4 were fatal.
The number of serious traffic accidents (2) remained the same while there was a slight increase in minor traffic accidents (23 in April 2024 versus 22 in the corresponding month of 2023)
As can be seen from the overall statistics concerning road safety and traffic policing issues published by the General Regional Police Directorate of Central Macedonia, from the traffic accidents that occurred in urban and rural areas of the six prefectures, in April 2024 a total of 45 victims were recorded against 40 in the corresponding month of 2023. In particular, the following were recorded:
- 10 dead, compared to 5 in 2023.
- 3 seriously injured, compared to 4 in 2023.
- 32 slightly injured, compared to 31 in 2023.
The main causes of traffic accidents, as revealed by the police traffic investigation, were:
– Excessive speed
– Driving under the influence of alcohol
– Driver distraction
– Not using a safety belt / protective helmet
– The movement in the opposite traffic flow
– Using a mobile phone while driving
– Violation of priority
Also in the context of the traffic management actions, in the month of April of the year 2024, among others, 13,514 violations were confirmed. They confirmed in detail:
7,394 offenses for excessive speed,
4,461 commercial vehicle violations,
443 offenses for not using a seat belt,
323 offenses for KTEO,
183 offenses for driving under the influence of alcohol,
143 offenses for not wearing a protective helmet,
141 violations for driving in the left traffic lane or not driving on the right edge of the roadway,
135 offenses for driving in the opposite direction of traffic,
88 violations for irregular maneuvers,
84 offenses for illegal overtaking,
83 offenses for breaking a red light,
19 violations for priority violation,
11 offenses for not using child seats and
6 violations for illegally placed billboards.
Road safety tips
The Hellenic Police reminds all drivers and road users that road safety is everyone’s business and points out that drivers must apply the provisions of the Road Traffic Code, drive prudently and carefully and follow the instructions and advice of the Traffic staff.
The Greek Police notes that we must not forget that “driving safely” means:
– I learn and apply the Road Traffic Code
– I have constantly strained my attention on driving and controlling the vehicle
– I have not consumed alcoholic beverages when I drive
– I don’t break the speed limit
– I always wear a seat belt
– I place the children in a child seat in the back of the car and wear a seat belt
– In case I drive or am a passenger on a motorcycle, I always wear a helmet
– I don’t run a red light
– I stop at STOP and give priority
– I don’t talk on the cell phone when I drive
– I respect the signals and instructions of the traffic controllers.
